I based the essence of this story loosely on the East Asian mythological belief of the Red String of Fate. The myth is summarised quite neatly by the following Chinese proverb:

“An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.”
